“Wonder Woman” or Female warriors

WW_MsMagI know that women rights have being a major topic in the blog but it matters. I should say before that the film is good, not memorable, and Gal Gadot is not a good actress. But this is the first major film of a woman super heroine. Even Ms. magazine dedicated a cover in 1972 and an article from Gloria Steinem.

The Amazon Princess, Diana of Themyscira, is the chosen one to defeat Ares, god of war. During World War I (1915-1918), the world faced a true challenge that made it join together. The women’s suffrege initiated in Isle of Man in 1881 but after the World War I, Canada (1917), Britain (1918) and USA (1920) benefit of the union and improved the women’s sufraggete. Latin american countries improved it around 1940, before World War II (1939-1945).

TWe_Can_Do_It!here was a major roll for women in WWII and another icon appears: Rosie, the Riveter. That was a cultural icon of the United States, representing the American women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II. Rosie the Riveter is used as a symbol of feminism and women’s economic power. A year after, in 1942, “Ronnie, the bren gun girl” gave origin to this symbol in Canada.

Joan of Arc

In France, there was a major icon in feminism and war: Joan from Arc (Jeanne d’Arc). Joan said she received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination late in the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). She was betrayed, take it to trial (charges of heresy and cross-dressing) and executed by burning. Film

Another woman warrior was Boudica or Boudicca. She was a queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led a rebellion against the Roman Empire and the mad Emperor of Rome Nero in AD 60 or 61. She dies shortly after but she was a great warrior. Film

The women are treated like the weaker gender but they are important for the humankind. We need to empower the women and they need to embrace the idea of feminism, because together we need to create equality. In the movie we can also see the idea of free will, choosing between peace or war; and it develops the idea of fighting for your ideas.

What do you think about women’s rights and suffrage?

What do you think about war?
